Welcome to Shandong Kung Fu Academy

Shandong Kung Fu Academy is a renowned institution dedicated to providing high-quality martial arts instruction to students of all ages and skill levels. The founder of this academy, Sifu Tim McFarland, has studied martial arts for over 50 years in the United States and China.

Sifu McFarland began studying under Sifu Chen Au in Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu. He then started his in-depth study of 7 Star Praying Mantis and graduated under Sifu Wang Xing Han in 1983. He continued to study aspects of Praying Mantis and Northern Shaolin with many famous masters including Professor Jiang Zhou Cun, Sifu Xu Bo Ran, Sifu Brendan Lai, Master Wang Jurong, Master Su Long and Grandmaster Zhang Bing Dou.

Sifu McFarland also studied Tai Chi Chuan, both Yang and Chen systems, with several masters including Grandmaster Fu Zhong Wen (Yang Taiji), and Professor Jiang Zhou Cun (Chen Taiji).

He began teaching in the San Francisco Bay Area at his original school in 1983 under the name Tong Long Wu Shu Academy. In 1985, he adopted the new school’s name of North Bay Kung Fu Academy, and then in 1996, the Academy became a non-profit and changed its name to North Bay Kung Fu Institute. In 2010, the school went through an expansion and became The California Martial Arts Institute.

Over the years with many changes in martial arts, the academy evolved in several directions and had taught over 4000 students with many amazing memories, winning many competitions, and achieving incredible accomplishments worldwide. In 2015, Sifu McFarland handed over the California Martial Arts Institute to his senior instructor and retired to Las Vegas where he currently resides.

With many students still interested in his teachings, Sifu McFarland has come out of retirement and has opened this new academy once again. The main focus of the Academy is to promote traditional Kung Fu for health, longevity, philosophy, spirituality, and self-defense. While it is very easy for many people to only relate to the self-defense concept of the art, they must remember it is only one of the many important aspects of kung fu.

The Academy will train individuals on all principles and with traditional training. With in person training and the ability to teach Live Online Training from the studio, it has provided many students the opportunity to study from any location.

Shandong Kung Fu Academy will be offering 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Shaolin Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Yang and Chen Tai Qi Quan, Shorin Ryu Karate and Wing Chun.
